Royal College of Music Opera Studio to Present the UK Premiere of Libby Larsen’s ‘Barnum’s Bird’

By Afton Wooten

The Royal College of Music Opera Studio will give the UK premiere of Libby Larsen’s “Barnum’s Bird” on June 28.

Grammy Award-winning composer Libby Larsen’s chamber opera “Barnum’s Bird” tells the true story of PT Barnum and his star opera singer, Swedish soprano Jenny Lind. In two acts Larsen tells the story of the famous tour of America in 1850 where PT Barnum sensationalized and marketed Jenny Lind in a way that had never been seen before.

Later in Lind’s life, she was appointed as professor of singing at the Royal College of Music in its inaugural year 1882. Lind was one of only two female professors at the time.

The role of Jenny Lind is performed by both Henna Mun and RCM Stephen Catto Memorial Scholar Lylis O’Hara. PT Barnum is performed by Dafydd Jones and Marcus Swietlicki. Michael Roswell conducts with Ella Marchment directing the majority female production team.

More performances will take place on June 30 and July 1 and 3.
