Royal Academy Opera to Present New Edition of ‘Dido and Aeneas’

The Royal Academy Opera, a UK-based indepedent opera company, has announced that it will present the world premiere of a new edition of Purcell’s famed “Dido and Aeneas.”

The premiere will stream via YouTube on May 27 and 28, 2021. The new edition will be conducted by Elizabeth Kenny with director Jack Furness leading the production.

The May 27 cast will feature Bernadette Johns as Dido with Aeneas played by Dan D’Souza. Other cast members for the Friday showcase include Grace Wyatt, Camilla Harris, Kathleen Nic Dhiarmada, Isla MacEwan, Cassandra Wright, Maximillian Lawrie, and Silja Brynjarsdóttir. The May 28 cast will include Julia Portela Piñón and Patrick Keefe in the title roles alongside Sophie Sparrow, Giulia Laudano, Will Pate, Josi Ellem, Angharad Rowlands, Nina Korbe, and Henry Ross.

The chorus on both evenings will feature Clara Orif (S), Lauren Macleod (M), Samuel Stopford (T), and Jack Lee (B).

The company also announced that it will reveal its summer term of live-streamed performances on April 6, 2021.
