On Dec. 18, 2019, Bellini’s “I Puritani” is set to open at the Deustsche Oper am Rhein in a new production by Rolando Villazón.

The new production is set to star Operalia award winners Adela Zaharia and Ioan Hotea in their debuts as Elvira and Arturo. Antonino Fogliani conducts the production which will open at the Opernhaus Düsseldorf.

In a press statement Villazón explained, Elvira “lives in a patriarchal society and the reason she is so fragile is that the rules of this male society are too much for her. Her ability to think, feel and experience things gradually falls apart. Ultimately her madness is also the negation of all society’s rules.”

Zaharia recently performed “Lucia di Lammermoor” and “Maria Stuarda” with the Deutsche Oper am Rhein while Hotea returns to the company after his performance as Ernesto in Villazón’s production of “Don Pasquale.”

Rounding out the cast, Günes Gürle stars as Elvira’s father Lord Valton while Bogdan Taloş will sing the role of Giorgio. Jorge Espino is set to take on the role of  Riccardo and Sarah Ferede will sing Queen Enrichetta.
