Roberto Alagna To Debut Lohengrin At The Bayreuth Festival

Roberto Alagna will sing Wagner’s “Lohengrin” at the Bayreuth Festival in 2018.

After speculation that the tenor would perform the role, the Bayreuth Festival announced the news via Twitter. The tenor will sing the role alongside Anja Harteros, who has performed Elsa to great acclaim around the world and Waltraud Meier, who will portray Ortrud.

Tomasz Konieczny will sing Telramund and Georg Zeppenfeld will bring his signature King Henrich. Christian Thielemann, who has garnered raves for his interpretation, will lead from the podium. Yuval Sharon will direct the production.

The role of Lohengrin marks Alagna’s first Wagner role and will also be his debut at the Bayreuth Festival. Alagna has recently moved into the spinto-dramatic repertoire singing roles like “Otello” and Calaf in “Turandot.” This season he will make his role debut as Samson in “Samson et Dalila” at the Vienna State Opera and is also slated to reprise Manrico in “Il Trovatore” at the Opéra National de Paris.
