Roberto Alagna Cancels Performance Of ‘Carmen’

By Francisco Salazar

Roberto Alagna has canceled opening night of Bizet’s “Carmen” at the Opéra de Paris.

The company announced that due to health reasons, the tenor was forced to cancel the opening performance on April 11. As a result, Jean-François Borras will perform the role of Don José.

Borras is set to join Anita Rachvelishvili, who sings the title role, Nicole Car, and Roberto Tagliavini.

Borras was already scheduled to perform “Carmen” at the Opéra de Paris in the second cast starting April 23. The tenor recently performed “La Traviata’ in Paris and is set to sing the title roles of “Les Contes d’Hoffmann” in Lausanne and “Werther” in Toulouse. He will also perform in a revival of “Manon” at the Wiener Staatsoper and a new production of “Mesphistophele.”

Alagna returns to “Carmen” on April 14 and sings through the 20.
