
Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music Reveals 2024-25 Season
By David SalazarRice University’s Shepherd School of Music has unveiled its 2024-25 season. Here is a rundown of the upcoming vocal performances.
First up is the Rice Chorale in concert. The ensemble will perform three times throughout the season.
Performance Dates: Sept. 11 & Nov. 25, 2024 & April 14, 2025
Next up is Ana María Martínez & Friends in Recital. The famed soprano will be joined on stage by opera department students and pianist Bethany Self.
Performance Dates: Sept. 13, 2024
Louis Lohrsaeb will conduct “Alcina.” Crystal Manich directs.
Performance Dates: Nov. 1 & 3, 2024
Ryan McKinny & Friends in Recital” will feature the famed bass-baritone and Shepherd School opera students. Tonya McKinny will direct the showcase.
Performance Dates: Nov. 9, 2024
“Spirit of the Season” will showcase voice and instrumental students in time for the holidays.
Performance Dates: Dec. 7, 2024
There will be a performance spotlighting a world premiere by Richard Lavenda for two vocalists and chamber ensemble. Performers include Thomas Jaber, Marianne Gedigian, Benjamin Kamins, and James Dunham.
Performance Dates: Jan. 16, 2025
Tonya and Ryan McKinny will deliver a masterclass as part of the Aleko Enowed Master Class Artist Series.
“The opportunity for our students to work with artists of this caliber is invaluable,” said Joshua Winograde, the Shepherd School’s director of opera studies, per an official press reelease. “Tonya and Ryan bring a wealth of experience as performers, directors and educators. And of course Ryan’s performing career has comprised heavy doses of Wagner’s operas. Their ability to connect with young artists and help them unlock deeper layers of storytelling, especially in this challenging repertoire, is truly inspiring.”
Performance Dates: Feb. 8, 2025
Next up is “Ryan McKinny & Friends in Recital” will feature the famed bass-baritone and Shepherd School opera students. Tonya McKinny will direct the showcase which features scenes from “Das Rheingold.” Artists performing include Lucila Zavala (Woglinde), Hanna Frampton (Wellgunde), Isabelle Kosempa (Flosshilde) and Matan Gendelman (Alberich). For the final scene of the opera, audiences will see Joseph Park (Wotan), Julia Holoman (Fricka), Elizabeth Kirkconnell (Freia), Edmond Rodriguez (Loge), Colin Miller (Froh), Tzvi Bat Asherah (Donner), William Dopp (Fasolt) and Garrett Reider (Fafner).
Performance Dates: March 7, 2025
Benjamin Manis conducts Patricia Racette’s production of John Corigliano’s “The Ghosts of Versailles.” Productions will be preceded by “Inside Opera: Pre-Show Talks.”
