Rice University Shepherd School of Music Announces 2023-24 Season

Rice University Shepherd School of Music has unveiled its 2023-24 season. Here is a rundown of the vocal performances on offer.

The season opens with “Harmonious Horizons,” which includes a performance of “Knoxville: Summer of 1915,” starring soprano Michelle Bradley. Robert Spano conducts the concert, which also includes Barber’s first symphony and Jennifer Higdon’s “Concerto for Orchestra.”

Performance Date: Sept. 29 & 30, 2023

The Shepherd School Opera will present “Eugene Onegin.” Stephanie Rhodes Russell conducts and Paul Curran directs.

Performance Date: Nov. 3 & 5, 2023

Twenty-four singers from The Crossing will headline “Can We Know the Sound of Forgiveness.”

Performance Date: Jan. 20, 2024

There will be an “Opera Scenes” program.

Performance Date: Feb. 4, 2024

Benjamin Manis conducts a double bill of “Dido and Aeneas” and “The Rape of Lucretia.” R.B. Schlather directs.

Performance Date: April 5 & 7, 2024

Mathew Aucoin and Peter Sellar’s “Music for New Bodies” will feature five vocal soloists, students of the Shepherd School as well as DACAMERA Young Artists.

Performance Date: April 20, 2024

Harmonia Stellarum Houston will present Monteverdi’s “A Caecilian Vespers.”

Performance Date: April 21, 2024
