Renée Fleming, Bryn Terfel, Roderick Williams, Shenyang, Sophie Bevan Headline London Philharmonic Orchestra’s 2021-22 Season

The London Philharmonic Orchestra has unveiled its 2021-22 London season.

For the purposes of this article, our focus will be on vocal and operatic works.

The season kicked off with Tippett’s “The Midsummer Marriage” starring Robert Murray, Sophie Bevan, Ashley Riches, Jennifer France, Toby Spence. Edward Gardner conducted.

Performance Date: Sept. 25, 2021

Next up is “In Bluebeard’s Castle.” The showcase will feature a performance of Bartók’s famed opera “Bluebeard’s Castle” under the musical direction of Edward Gardner. Ildikó Komlósi and John Relyea will star in the opera. The program will also feature Haydn’s Symphony No. 90.

Performance Date: Nov. 6, 2021

Mark Elder will lead the U.K. premiere of James MacMillan’s Christmas Oratorio with Lucy Crowe and Roderick Williams as the soloists.

Performance Date: Dec. 4, 2021

Tan Dun will lead the U.K. premiere of his own “Buddha Passion” with Sen Guo, Huiling Zhu, and Shenyang as the soloists.

Performance Date: Feb. 19, 2022 

Bryn Terfel will sing music by Brahms in a concert that also features works by Mendelssohn and Schoenberg. Edward Gardner conducts.

Performance Date: March 19, 2022

Christiane Karg and Roderick Williams will headline Brahms’ A German Requiem in a performance also featuring music by Lili Boulanger and Messiaen. Edward Gardner conducts.

Performance Date: April 2, 2022

Renée Fleming will perform music by Verdi and Strauss in a concert conducted by Enrique Mazzola.

Performance Date: April 22, 2022

Sophie Bevan will be featured in a concert showcasing music by Britten, Ravel, and Knussen. Edward Gardner conducts.

Performance Date: April 30, 2022

Magdalena Kozena and Andrew Staples will perform Mahler’s “Das Lied von der Erde,” conducted by Edward Gardner. The program will also include Birtwistle’s “Deep Time.”

Performance Date: May 6, 2022
