Really Spicy Opera Announces Winners of Quarantine Opera Initiative

By David Salazar

Really Spicy Opera in Minneapolis has announced the winners of its Quarantine Opera Initiative.

The winners include “6 Feet Apart” by Bea Goodwin and Felix Jarrar; “Aborted Party” by Helena Michelson; “The Handoff” by Daniel Solon and Sean Pflueger; and “Viral” by Cecelia Raker and Keith Allegretti.

The scenes submitted will be presented in video form at some point in the near future.

The initiative came about a few days back when the company put out a call in light of the social distancing taking place around the world. Submissions poured in until the company eventually settled on the selections that they will stage and performance virtually.

Allegretti and Raker previously teamed up for “Good Country,” while Goodwin and Jarrar have worked together on such works as “Tabula Rasa” and “Christmas Carol.” Pflueger is the composer of such operas as “The Pier Point Lobster Race,” “Children in the Mist,” “Do Not Disturb,” and “Brides and Mothers,” while Solon is a theatre maker who has worked in both Europe and the U.S. Finally, Michelson was a finalist at the 2017 HGOco Song of Houston Composer Call.
