Random Opera Announces New Works Competition for Composers

By Logan Martell

Random Opera, in collaboration with Creative Juices, has announced its first New Works Competition to support emerging composers and deliver exciting, new operas to the public.

Composers are invited to submit a proposal for a short opera for voice and piano, with the winner having their work performed live on stage and recorded for online streaming; there will also be a cash prize of 1,000 pounds. The submissions will be judged by a distinguished panel of guest judges, comprised of Sir David Putney, Martyn Brabbins, and Claire Rutter.’

“This competition is a decisive step for Random Opera into the production of new music,” Richard Tegid Jones, General Director of Random Opera, told OperaWire. “We love the classics and they’ll always be part of our repertoire, but Opera is a living art form, and it needs to grow and adapt to the world around it. We hope that this will be the first of many new works that Random Opera will produce.”
Applications are open until July 31, 2021, with the winners being announced on Random Opera’s website and social media on August 21.
