The Metropolitan Opera has named Rachel Willis-Sørensen the 2025 Beverly Sills Artist Award Winner.
Willis-Sørensen will receive $50,000 as part of the award, which recognizes “extraordinarily gifted singers with rising Met careers.” The soprano debuted in 2014 in “Le Nozze di Figaro” and has since appeared in several major productions with the company. This season, she was Leonora in “Il Trovatore” and next season, she returns as “Arabella.”
“As a young singer, I dreamed of singing at the Metropolitan Opera and remember the joy of singing for the first time on this stage as a Laffont Competition finalist in 2010. I feel incredibly grateful that my dream of performing here has come true, and to receive this recognition for my work is an honor that I truly treasure—one that encourages me to continue pushing my limits and further developing my artistic ability,”Willis-Sørensen said per an official press release. “Beverly Sills has always been an inspiration to me, with incredible artistry, masterful technique, breadth of repertoire, promotion of opera in popular culture, and her devotion to charity. It is an honor to be associated with her in some small way and to continue her work in promoting opera.”
Past winners includes Leah Hawkins in 2024, Ryan Speedo Green in 2023, Will Liverman in 2022, and five artists in 2021. The award was established back in 2006 in recognition of Beverly Sills. The first winner was Nathan Gunn.
