Quinn Kelsey & Piotr Beczala Headline Metropolitan Opera’s New Production of ‘Rigoletto’

On Dec. 31, 2021, the Metropolitan Opera will ring in the new year with a new production of Verdi’s “Rigoletto.”

The production which is set to be shown nine times and will be directed by Bartlett Sher with set designs by Michael Yeargan, costume designs Catherine Zuber, and lighting designs by Donald Holder.

The production, which originally opened at the Staatsoper Berlin, is set in 1920s Europe, featuring Art Deco sets and elegant costumes.

Daniele Rustioni conducts a cast that includes Quinn Kelsey in his Met role debut as Rigoletto and Rosa Feola as Gilda. Piotr Beczała brings his acclaimed Duke of Mantua back to the Met, the role with which he debuted in 2006 and also performed in 2013. Varduhi Abrahamyan makes her Met debut as Maddalena, and Andrea Mastroni returns in his acclaimed Sparafucile.

The production also returns in May for five performances with Kelsey in the title role, Kristina Mkhitaryan as Gilda, and Stephen Costello as the Duke of Mantua. Yulia Matochkina and Ante Jerkunica make their role debuts with Karel Mark Chichon conducting.

“Rigoletto” runs through Jan. 29 and then between May 28 and June 11. The performance on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2022, will be transmitted live to cinemas around the globe as part of The Met: Live in HD series and broadcast over the Toll Brothers–Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network. The December 31 performance, as well as the Jan. 4, 19, 29, and June 8, 2022, performances of “Rigoletto” will be broadcast live on Met Opera Radio on Sirius XM Channel 355.
