Queen Sonja Singing Competition Announces 2023 Winners

The Queen Sonja Singing Competition has announced the 2023 winners.

Contralto Jasmin White was named first prize winner, while baritone Aksel Daveyan took home second prize. The third prize went to countertenor Nils Wanderer. White sang excerpts from “Semele” and “Das Rheingold,” while Daveyan sang from “Iolanta” and “Faust.” Finally, Wanderer performed from “Written on Skin” and “Tolomeo.”

The three winners were picked from six finalists that also included Navasard Hakobyan, Vladyslav Tlushch, and Rebecka Wallroth.

This year’s jury was made up of Randi Stene (Director of Opera at The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet, Oslo); Samuel Gelber (Director of Artistic Planning at the Washington National Opera, Washington D.C.); Michael Heaston (Assistant General Manager, Artistic at The Metropolitan Opera, New York); Stefan Herheim (Opera Director at the Theater an der Wien); Sophie de Lint (Director of Dutch National Opera, Amsterdam); Pål Christian Moe (Artistic Administrator and Casting Adviser); and Annette Weber (Opera Director at the Opernhaus Zürich).
