Puget Sound Concert Opera to Give West Coast Premiere of ‘La Callas’
By Afton MarkayThe Puget Sound Concert Opera will present the West Coast performances of “La Callas,” a new opera by composer Clint Borzoni and librettist Elizabeth Coppinger.
This English-language work is based on the true story of the love affair between Maria Callas and Aristotle Onassis. “La Callas” is seen through the perspective of the Greek gods Zeus and Hera. The opera offers a modern myth about one of the most iconic women of the twentieth century.
Soprano Sarah Fletcher sings the title role with baritone Misha Myznikov performing the role of Aristotle Onassis. The cast also includes mezzo-soprano Rosamund Dyer and bass-baritone Darrell J. Jordan as the Greek gods Hera and Zeus, with tenor Derek Sellers as Giovanni Battista Meneghini and soprano Emilie Faiella as Tina Onassis. Soprano Susan Payne O’Brian, mezzo-soprano Karen Early Evans, tenor Cary Lee, and bass Michael David Dunlap round out the cast. John Berkhardt accompanies at the piano.
Borzoni says in a press release, “I was moved by the range of emotion between these two people; their intense passion makes the betrayal all the more heart-rending, which inspired the depth and breadth of the music. It’s beyond biography, it’s a story for the ages.”
Act one of “La Callas” will be performed on Dec. 5 and 7, at the ArtLove Salon in Seattle, WA.
