Puerto Rican Soprano Larisa Martinez Weighs in on Insulting Puerto Rico ‘Joke’
By Francisco SalazarComedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s “joke” about Puerto Rico as a “floating Island of Garbage” might have captured the imagination and nationalist fervor of the thousands of supporters at former President Donald Trump’s Madison Square MAGA Rally, but most Puerto Ricans were not laughing about it.
Least of all Puerto Rican soprano Larisa Martinez.
In response to Hinchcliffe’s racist “joke,” the soprano commented on social media that “It’s not for anybody to define what Puerto Rico is ‘filled with’ but for Puerto Ricans…⛰️❤️ A Puerto Rico lo definimos los puertorriqueños. ❤️ Voting early this year…”
Martinez is the latest singer to speak out regarding the election following Joyce DiDonato and Limmie Pulliam.
This season the soprano will tour with violinist Joshua Bell, in a program entitled “Voice and the Violin” that explores repertoire ranging from classical art song and opera, to musical theater, to a series of selections by Puerto Rican and Spanish composers.SHe also performs alongside the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra in selection from Villa-Lobos’ “Floresta do Amazonas.”
