Public Workers’ Strike Forces Hamburg State Opera to Cancel Premiere of ‘Il Trittico’

The Hamburg State Opera has postponed the Mar. 12, 2023, B premiere of Puccini’s “Il Trittico” because of a strike by the public service workers’ union ver.di. The strike means there may not be enough staff to clean up after the show.

The strikes announced by ver.di have affected the premiere of “Il Trittico” on Sunday, March 12, 2023. After discussions with the union on Friday, the Hamburg State Opera management postponed the B premiere to Wednesday, March 15, 2023.

State Opera Director Georges Delnon expressed his disappointment at having to cancel the first performance of Il Trittico, saying, “So many people worked on this premiere – soloists, choir, state orchestra, direction team, musical team, stage, costumes, make-up and many more. I feel sorry for all of them as well as for our loyal audience.”

Audience members with tickets for the canceled premiere can exchange them for a ticket to one of the performances between March 15 and April 8, subject to availability.
