Protest Breaks Out at Teatro Alla Scala Over Israel-Hamas War

By Francisco Salazar

A protest broke out on Dec. 23 at the Teatro alla Scala over the war between Israel and Hamas and its impact on Gaza.

According to Slippdisc, the protest happened during a rehearsal for the Christmas concert that was set to be conducted by Daniel Harding.

In a video recording released on X (formerly known as Twitter), protesters shouted and held up Palestinian flags.

This is the latest protest at the Teatro alla Scala this season. During opening night on Dec. 7, 2023, a cry of “no to fascism,’’ went up from the upper tiers of the theater followed by one of “Long live anti-fascist Italy.” There were also quiet protests with some female attendees wearing red shoes and jangled their keys as part of growing protests to end violence against women.

OperaWire has reached to La Scala for more information on the protest.
