
Pro-Putin Supporter Ildar Abdrazakov Named Artistic Director of the Mikhailovsky Theatre

The bass took to social media to announced the news stating, “It is with great joy and responsibility that I accept the post of artistic director of the St. Petersburg State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater. М. P. Musorgsky – Mikhailovsky Theater and happy to be a part of a wonderful theater collective. First of all, I would like to thank the Governor of St. Petersburg Alexander Dmitrievich Beglov for his high confidence.”
He added “The Mikhailovsky Theatre is a unique world with a richest history, a brilliant troupe and a devoted, sensitive audience.
I devote my whole life to art and opera. And now I am ready to direct all my energy, experience and knowledge to ensure that the Mikhailovsky Theater carefully preserves centuries-old traditions while boldly looking ahead, discovering new names. I am confident that the Mikhailovsky Theatre’s collaboration with the Sevastopol Opera and Ballet Theatre, where I continue to serve as artistic director, will open new horizons for both companies and offer audiences vibrant joint projects. There is a lot of work ahead, and I am truly happy to have the opportunity to serve art in the glorified Mikhailovsky Theatre. Great things are ahead of us.”
Abdrazakov took up the position in March 2026 will succeed Vladimir Kekhman, who had headed the theater since 2007. Alexander Soloviev, who was temporarily serving as Acting Artistic Director, will continue his work as the theatre’s Musical Director and Principal Conductor.
Among the international artists that recently performed at the Mikhailovsky Theatre are Aida Garifullina, Vittorio Grigolo, and Boris Pinkhasovich.
