Premiere of ‘La Perla Negra’ Headlines Auditorio Nacional del Sodre’s Summer & Fall 2023 Slate

The Auditorio Nacional del Sodre in Uruguay is set to open its summer and fall slate with two opera productions and several concerts. Here’s a look at the classical vocal performances.

Opera

First up is Uruguayan composer Beatriz Lockhart and librettist Raúl Montero’s “La Perla Negra.” The opera will be directed by Hugo Blandamuro and will feature the Conjunto Nacional de Música de Cámara. Esteban Louise conducts. 

Ángela Álves will star in the new opera which is inspired by the life of singer Lágrima Ríos (1924 – 2006). She will be joined by Álvaro Godiño, Gerardo Marandino, Stephanie Holm, Alicia Costa, and Damián Trinidad.

Performance Dates: June 30, 2023

Next up is Verdi’s “Aida.” Nicolás Rauss conducts and Anibal Lápiz directs. The opera stars Valentina Boi, Sandra Silvera, Carlo Ventre, José Azocar, Ana Lucia Benedetti, Annabella Carnevali, Rodolfo Giugliani, and Savio Sperandio. 

Performance Dates: Nov. 16 & 23, 2023

Mozart / Villa Lobos Festival

The company will present a small Festival honoring the work of Mozart and Villa-Lobos. First up is the Missa Solemnis which will feature Mozart’s famed work with soprano Sofía Mara as the soloist. Nicolas Rauss conducts the program, which also includes a Mozart Symphony and Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas brasileiras.

Performance Dates: July 15, 2023

Closing out this mini-festival is Mozart’s Requiem with soloists from the Coro del Sodre. Estaban Louise conducts.

Concerts

The Coro Nacional de Niños del Sodre will join forces with Les Petits Chanteurs du Mont-Royal.

The Coro Nacional de Niños del Sodre will participate in “¡¡¡Fiesta!!!”

Performance Dates: July 5, 2023

The Coro Nacional Juvenil will headline “Coro de la nostalgia,” a concert featuring traditional Uruguayan music. Estaban Louise conducts.

The Coro Nacional de Niños del Sodre will headline “De Boleros +,” a concert that focuses on Cuban music. Selma Gutiérrez conducts.

Performance Dates: August 18, 2023

Estaban Louise will conduct “Barroco coral.”

Performance Dates: Sept. 30, 2023

Next up is “Fraternidad,” a concert featuring both the Coro Nacional de Niño and the Coro Nacional Juvenil. Victor Mederos conducts.

Performance Dates: Oct. 11, 2023

The Coro Nacional will star in a concert of Spirituals and Gospel music. Estaban Louise conducts.

Performance Dates: Oct. 20, 2023

Nicolas Rauss will lead “Parsifal without words,” a suite by H. De Vlieger. The program also includes music by Brahms.

The Children’s Chorus will present a concert that honors traditional music entitled “De Nuestras Tierras.” Victor Mederos conducts.

Victor Mederos conducts the Coro Nacional de Niños in “Ecos,” a program featuring works by Poulenc, Lutoslawsky, Orff, Grau, and Azurza, among others.

Performance Dates: Nov. 25, 2023

There will be a Brahms gala featuring the Coro Nacional. Estaban Louise conducts.
