Prague’s State Opera Reopens With Gala Performance

The Prague’s State Opera historical building is back in business.

After three years of reconstruction, the famed venue opened its door with a gala concert on Jan. 5, 2020 staged by Alice Nellis. The concert, which feature a number of Czech politicians in attendance, showcased a wide range of music from such composers as Wagner, Mozart, Janacek, Strauss, Smetana, Martinu, and Beethoven.

Major Czech performers to appear in the gala included tenor Pavel Cernoch, as well as sopranos Eva Urbanova and Katerina Knezikova. Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen appeared in the performance as a guest.

The State Opera Orchestra appeared alongside the soloists, conducted by Karl-Heinz Steffens.

The State Opera is set to feature a wide range of operas throughout the season including “Fidelio” and “Madama Butterfly,” as well as “King Roger” and “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.”
