Portland Opera Will Have A New General Director For the 2019-20 Season

By David Salazar

There will be a shift in the Portland Opera’s executive leadership.

Per a press release, General Director Christopher Mattaliano will be transitioning to the role of Artistic Consultant at the start of 2019-20 season with Sue Dixon, the current Director of External Affairs, set to become Interim General Director as of July 15, 2019.

Mattaliano started working with the organization back in 1990 when he directed “Manon.” From there he would eventually become General Director in 2003. He would create the Portland Opera Resident and Artist Program in 2005 and was a major part of expanding the company’s repertory with over 30 Portland Opera premieres.

“The Board of Directors is exceedingly grateful to Christopher Mattaliano for his 16 years of leadership and vision at Portland Opera,” President of the Board of Directors, Curtis T. Thompson, MD, stated in a press release. “Chris has led our company through a period of artistic excellence during his tenure and created wonderful community programs and unforgettable productions. We are looking forward to building upon his work with this next chapter for Portland Opera, and with Sue Dixon’s leadership, vision, and commitment to community.”

Dixon, meanwhile, joined the company in 2014 as the Director of Development and was named to Director of External Affairs in 2017.
