Portland Opera Announces Sixth General Director

By David Salazar

The Portland Opera Board of Directors has removed the interim tag from Sue Dixon, naming her the sixth General Director of the company.

Dixon has been with the Portland Opera since 2014, working as director of development and eventually director of external affairs in 2017. She was also named interim general director in July 2019.

“I know, firsthand, what it takes to achieve strategic organizational growth,” Dixon said in a press release. “My passion is for connecting people with excellent and meaningful artistic and cultural experiences, and that comes with a commitment to community.  I am confident that Portland Opera can navigate our financial challenges as we embark on the strategies outlined in our plan. We have an amazing team in place, we have extraordinary artists and musicians whose work remains at the heart of our company, and we have patrons, advocates and supporters who care so deeply about this beautiful art form in our region. They deserve a healthy and thriving Portland Opera.”

In addition to Dixon’s big position, the company also announced that starting in 2020-21, it would be returning to a September through May programming schedule. The company will also implement a five year plan to modernize its business practices and balance its budget.

Additionally, the company revealed that Daniel Biaggi would join as the executive team’s interim artistic director. He will also work with Dixon to find a permanent artistic director by the 2022-23 season.
