Polish National Opera Unveils 2023-24 Season

The Polish National Opera has unveiled its 2023-24 season.

First up is a concert featuring the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra in protest of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The event will feature conductor Keri-Lynn Wilson leading a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth symphony with such soloists as Olga Kulchynska, Nicole Chirka, Dmytro Polov, and Vladyslav Buialsk.

Performance Date: August 20, 2023

There will be concert performances of “Thumbelina” starring Ewa Bukala, Anna Lobedan, Magdalena Czuba, Marcin Przybylski, and Przemyslaw Kowalski.

Performance Date: Sept. 10, 2023 – March 10, 2024

“Chorus Opera” will feature selections from works by Bizet, Leoncavallo, Penderecki, Szymanowski, Verdi, and Wagner, among others. Soloists include Rafal Bartminski, Tadeusz Szlenkier, Justyna Khil, and Anna Terlecka, among many others. Patrick Fournillier conducts.

Performance Date: Sept. 28, 2023 – Jan. 7, 2024

That is followed up by “Dead End,” a new opera by Krzysztof Meyer and Antoni Libera. The production is conducted by Łukasz Borowicz and directed by Marek Weiss. It stars Stanislav Kuflyuk, Krzystof Szumanski, Anna Bernacka, and Magdalena Pluta, among others.

Performance Date: Oct. 14 – 28 2023

Tehre will be a revival of “Die Zauberflöte” in a production by Suzanne Andrade and Barrie Kosky. It stars Gabriela Legun, Emil Lawecki, Katarzyna Drelich, Hubert Zapiór, and Maria Stasiak. Dawid Runtz conducts.

Performance Date: Oct. 25 – Nov. 5, 2023

Izabela Matula stars in “Madama Butterfly.” Patrick Fournillier conducts a cast also starring Rafal Barminski and Lukasz Golinski.

 Performance Date: Nov. 4 – 12, 2023 

There will be a semi-staged production of “Carmina Burana.” Martyna Szymczak conducts a cast starring Aleksandra Olczyk, Jakub Foltak, and Adam Kutny.

Performance Date: Dec. 1 – 29, 2023

“Aida” stars Ewa Plonka, Agnieszka Rehlis, Azer Zada, and Iurie Maimescu. Patrick Fournillier conducts. 

Performance Date: Dec. 8, 2023 – Feb. 4, 2024 

Next up is Simon Stone directing “Medée.” The cast stars Rafał Siwek, Izabela Matuła, Airam Hernández, and Elzbieta Wróblewska with Patrick Fournillier conducting.

Performance Date: Jan. 21 – 28, 2024

 “Maria de Buenos Aires” stars Natalia Kawalek, Lukasz Karauda, and Damian Kwiatkowski. Piotr Staniszewski conducts.

Performance Date: Jan. 27 – May 26, 2024

“La Traviata” stars Adriana Ferfecka and Aleksandra Olcyzk as Violetta Valéry. Patrick Fournillier conducts.

Performance Date: Feb. 10 – 18, 2024

“Così fan tutte” returns for the first time in 25 years. For this opera, the company will feature a production by Wojciech Faruga with Yaroslav Shemet conducting. The opera stars Aleksandra Orlowska, Zuzanna Nalewajek, Lukasz Kózka, Hubert Zapiór, and Artur Janda.

Performance Date: March 15 – June 22, 2024

“Hansel and Gretel” gets a performance.

Performance Date: April 7, 2024

“Halka” will star Krzysztof Szumanski, Maria Stasiak, Dariusz Machek, and Tomasz Rak. Lukasz Borowicz conducts.

Performance Date: May 8 – 12, 2024

Next up is ”Beatrix Cenci” by Ludomir Różycki and Stefania Różycka. Marta Kluczyńska conducts the concert performance. The opera stars Krzysztof Szumanski, Karina Skrzeszewska, Szymon Mechlinski, and Lukasz Zaleski, among others.

Performance Date: May 11, 2024

The final new production of the Polish National Opera season be “Boris Godunov.” Tomasz Konieczny takes on the title role with Michal Klauza conducting and Mariusz Trelinkski directing.

Performance Date: June 2 – 16, 2024
