Polish National Opera Postpones Performance Out of Respect for Pope Francis’ Funeral
By Francisco SalazarThe Polish National Opera has postponed its opening performance of “Ghost of the Governor” on April 26, 2025 following the death of Pope Francis.
The company said, “In connection with the announcement by the President of the Republic of Poland of a national mourning scheduled for April 26, 2025, as a tribute on the day of the funeral of Pope Francis, we inform you that the premiere of the “Ghost of the Governor” scheduled for that day is canceled. We are working on setting a new date of the event, which we will inform you as soon as possible. The decision to postpone the premiere was made because of the comedic nature of the work and out of respect for the seriousness of the moment. We hope for your understanding in this special situation.”
The opera will now open on June 3, 2025 at 7.00 p.m.
The Polish National Opera, however, noted that the ballet “Creations 17” will be performed as scheduled.
Pope Francis died on April 21, 2025 and the funeral will take place on April 26 outside in St. Peter’s Square.
