Polish National Opera Cancels ‘Madama Butterfly’

The Polish National Opera has canceled its upcoming production of “Madama Butterfly.”

The famed Puccini opera was set to open on Dec. 5 and star Aleksandra Kurzak, Bernadetta Grabias, Rafał Bartmiński, and Tomasz Rak.

The decision to cancel the December production of follows a current lockdown in which the company was set to remain closed until the end of November due to continued concerns over COVID-19. Back on Nov. 4, the Polish Council of Ministers introduced further COVID-19 restrictions which forced all theaters to close to the public from Nov. 7 until 29, 2020. Over the past month, Poland has seen a rise in cases with a total of 861,331 confirmed cases and 13,618 confirmed deaths.

The Polish National Opera is currently streaming operas from its archives via its digital platform and recently celebrated the 55th anniversary of the Teatr Wielki.
