Plácido Domingo was replaced after intermission of the final performance of Verdi’s “Nabucco” at the Wiener Staatsoper on Nov. 12, 2021.

An announcement was made before the performance that Domingo was suffering of a sore throat and that he asked for an audience understanding. However, after a break, the General Director of the Wiener Staatsoper Bogdan Roščić informed the audiences that Domingo’s health had deteriorated and that he would not be able to continue with the performance.

As a result, Mongolian baritone Amartuvshin Enkhbat took over the role. Enkhbat sang the whole run with the exception of the final performance, and was still in Vienna for the final presentation of the opera. Enkhbat thus joined a cast that included Saioa Hernández, Szilvia Vörös, Roberto Tagliavini, and Carlos Osuna. Paolo Carignani was in the pit of a Wiener Staatsoper.

Domingo and Enkhbat shared a final curtain call. Domingo is still slated to give “Nuit Espagnole” concert at the Wiener Staatsoper and Opéra de Monte Carlo on Nov. 15 & 19, 2021 respectively.
