Plácido Domingo and Juan Diego Flórez will sing at the opening of the World Cup.

The two superstars confirmed that they will join the already announced Anna Netrebko, Yusif Eyvazov, Aida Garifullina, Albina Shagimuratova, Ildar Abdrazakov, and pianist Denis Matsuev in Red Square on June 13. They will also be joined by Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra.

Roberto Alagna will no longer participate as previously announced.

In a press release, the organizers noted, “It is interesting that football events are usually opened by opera stars, because classical music is a universal code understood by residents of every country. Montserrat Caballé and Freddy Mercury, Plácido Domingo and José Carreras, who performed at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Barcelona, have set a great example to be followed. Luciano Pavarotti continued this tradition during the Winter Olympic Games in Turin.”

Domingo is a big soccer enthusiast and has performed at numerous soccer matches. Flórez is also a big soccer fan and both their countries, Peru and Spain will participate in this year’s event.
