Plácido Domingo Headlines Musco Center For The Arts’ 2019-20 Season

Chapman University’s Musco Center for the Arts has announced its 2019-20 season. For the purposes of this article, we will focus on opera and other vocal performances.

The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra and Chapman University Big Band, directed by Scotty Barnhart, will “serve up that signature, feel-good Basie sound: foot-stomping swing, soaring dynamic contrasts and very, very danceable rhythms.” Carmen Bradford will be featured as a guest vocalist.

Performance Date: Oct. 17, 2019

Award-winning country singer LeAnn Rimes will perform in concert.

Performance Date: Nov. 10, 2019

Broadway star Mandy Patinkin will appear for “Mandy Patinkin in Concert: Diaries,” an “intimate exploration of the music of Steven Sondheim, Harry Chapin, Randy Newman, Rufus Wainwright and more.” He will be accompanied by arranger, music director, and pianist Adam Ben-David.

Performance Date: Nov. 24, 2019

Australian guitarist Tommy Emmanuel will perform alongside two special guests, vocalist Morning Nichols, and guitarist Jim Nichols.

Performance Date: Dec. 10, 2019

The two-day holiday program “A Southern California Christmas” will feature more than 150 musicians, singers, and dancers from across Southern California, including the Orange Community Master Chorale.

Performance Dates: Dec. 14 & 15, 2019

Plácido Domingo will take on the role of the Queen’s wronged husband during a concert performance of Donizetti’s opera “Roberto Devereux,” featuring the LA Opera Orchestra and Chorus. He will be joined by Ramon Vargas in the title role and Davinia Rodriguez as Elisabetta, Queen of England. Eun Sun Kim will conduct. Domingo has previously appeared at Musco Center four times since his performance at the 2016 grand opening concert. According to Musco Center Executive Director Richard T. Bryant, the artist’s “long relationship with S. Paul and Marybelle Musco quickly evolved into a favored relationship with the Musco Center and accelerated its emergence into the forward-thinking ranks of university-based performing arts centers.”

Performance Date: Feb. 25, 2020

Trumpeter Herb Alpert and singer Lani Hall, a true music power couple, will perform “tunes from the American songbook, jazzy sets sprinkled with Brazilian rhythms, a Tijuana Brass medley, and much more.”

Performance Date: Feb. 27, 2020

Peter Sellars will present his very first a cappella staging, Orlando di Lasso’s “Lagrime di San Pietro” (“Tears of St. Peter”). Artistic Director Grant Gershon will lead the Los Angeles Master Chorale.

Performance Date: Mar. 19, 2020
