Plácido Domingo, Anna Netrebko, Jonas Kaufmann, Sonya Yoncheva Headline Arena di Verona’s 2021 Season

The Arena di Verona has announced its 2021 season, which will feature several notable performances with some of opera’s greatest stars.

It all kicks off with a 150th anniversary celebration of the 1871 world premiere of Verdi’s “Aida.” The opera will be conducted by Riccardo Muti with Sonya Yoncheva in the title role alongside Francesco Meli, Riccardo Zanellato, Luca Salsi, and Anita Rachvelishvili.

Additionally, “Aida” will be performed with such artists as Angela Meade, Maria José Siri, and Maida Hundeling in the title role as well as Jorge de Leòn, Murat Karahan, Roberto Aronica, Samuele Simoncini, Carlo Ventre, and Marcelo Alvarez as Radamès.

Performance Dates: June 19, 22,2021 (for 150th anniversary celebration); other performances June 26-Sept. 4

The famed “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “Pagliacci” double bill will star several casts.

In “Cavalleria,” the role of Santuzza will be sung by Anna Pirozzi, Sonia Ganassi, Maria José Siri, Alexandra Kurzak, and Ekaterina Semenchuk, each one getting a single performance. In the role of Turridu, Murat Karahan, Yusif Eyvazov, Piero Pretti, and Roberto Alagna will rotate; Karahan is the only tenor to get multiple performances.

As Lucia, audiences will hear legend Katia Ricciarelli, who will share the role with the likes of Agostina Smimmero and Elena Zilio. The role of Alfio will be rotated by Amartuvshin Enkhbat, Sebastian Catana, and Ambrogio Maestri.

In “Pagliacci,” Marina Rebeka, Valeria Sepe, Maria José Siri, and Aleksandra Kurzak will interpret Nedda. As Canio, audiences will hear Yusif Eyvazov, Roberto Alagna, and Vittorio Grigolo.

Verdi’s “Nabucco” will feature Amartuvshin Enkhbat, Sebastian Catana, Luca Salsi, and George Petean in the title role. Anna Pirozzi, Saioa Hernández, and Maida Hundeling star as Abigaile. Daniel Oren conducts.

Performance Dates: July 3-Sept. 1, 2021

Francesco Ivan Ciampa conducts “La Traviata” with Ailyn Pérez, Lisette Oropesa, Sonya Yoncheva, and Aida Garifullina all alternate as Violetta. Francesco Meli, Celso Albelo, Vittorio Grigolo, and Saimir Pirgu appear as Alfredo while the role of Germont is interpreted by Željko Lučić, Simone Piazzola, and George Petean.

Performance Dates: July 10-Sept. 2, 2021

Speranza Scappucci will conduct a single performance of Verdi’s “Requiem.” The cast will be announced at a later date.

Performance Date: July 18, 2021

Puccini’s “Turandot” gets performances with Anna Netrebko and Anna Pirozzi alternating in the title role. As Calaf, audiences will hear Yusif Eyvazov and Murat Karahan. Ruth Iniesta stars as Liù. Jader Bignamini and Francesco Ivan Ciampa conduct.

Gala Performances

Performance Dates: July 29-Sept. 3, 2021 

The company will also offer up a gala celebrating legendary singer Plácido Domingo.

Performance Date: July 30, 2021 

Tenor Jonas Kaufmann will also be featured in a gala event.

Performance Date: August 17, 2021 

The season will also include a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with soloists to be announced at a later date.
