Pittsburgh Opera to Present Virtual ‘Women’s March’ Concert

By Logan Martell

On March 26, 2021, Pittsburgh Opera will broadcast a free, virtual concert in celebration of women composers, titled “Women’s March.”

The program will draw from over 900 years of music, from composers such as Hildegard von Bingen, Barbara Strozzi, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, Alma Mahler, and Clara Schumann, Pauline Viardot, Marjory Kennedy-Fraser, Rebecca Clarke, Nadia and Lili Boulanger, Margaret bonds, Libby Larsen, and Lori Laitman.

The concert will feature PO’s 20-21 Resident Artists including mezzo Maire Carmack, sopranos Madeline Ehlinger and Veronique Filloux, baritone Yazid Gray, bass Jeremy Harr, and tenor Angel Romero. They will be accompanied by PO Music Staff Associate Coach James Lesniak.

“These composers have given us more than just beautiful music—they have used their talent and tenacity to ensure women have a place in the world of classical music,” says Pittsburgh Opera Manager of Community  Engagement and IDEA Initiatives Rebekah Diaz. “They’ve had to navigate  an industry and a world where women were not always respected as much as  their male colleagues, but they chose to raise up their voices so that  others could be heard.”
