Pittsburgh Opera to Present Two Modern Operas This May

By David Salazar

Pittsburgh Opera is set to present two modern operas this May.

The company will kick things off with “Denis & Katya” starting on May 6, 2023. The production, which will run through May 14 at the Bitz Opera Factory, will feature Jazmine Olwalia and Brandon Bell in the title roles with Haley Stamats directing Ted Huffman’s original production.

The opera tells the story of two 15-year-olds who, in 2016, died after a three-day standoff with Russian special forces and live streamed their final days.

That will be followed up by “We Shall Not Be Moved,” a production that is set to open on May 13 and runs through the 21st for a total of five performances. The work explores the lives of five teens who find refuge in an abandoned home in West Philadelphia. There, they run into the ghosts of the past, specifically many of whom confronted police in 1985 and died as a result.

The opera stars Kirstin Chávez, Alexa Patrick, Chance Jonas-O’Toole, John Holiday, Adam Richardson, Ron Dukes, Simon Phillips, Indira Cunningham, Ethan Gwyn, and Ira Cambric III. Viswa Subbaraman conducts.
