Piotr Beczala, Vivica Genaux & Marlis Petersen Headline Theater An Der Wien

The Theater an der Wien has announced its 2019-20 season featuring numerous rarely performed works, concert operas and a number of new productions.

Opera Productions

David Afkham conducts Amélie Niermeyer’s new production of Dvorak’s “Rusalka.” Maria Bengtsson sings the title role alongside Ladislav Elgr, Günther Groissböck, Natascha Petrinsky, and Kate Aldrich.

Performance Dates: Sept. 19 – 30, 2019

Stefan Gottfried conducts Sam Brown’s production of Mozart’s “La Clemenza di Tito” with Joseph Kaiser in the title role. Nicole Chevalier, Mari Eriksmoen, David Hansen, Kangmin Justin Kim, and Jonathan Lemalu round out the cast.

Performance Dates: Oct. 17 – 29, 2019

Elza van den Heever sings the title role of Spontini’s “La Vestale” with Bertrand de Billy conducting Johannes Erath’s production. Michael Spyres, Sebastian Gueze, Franz-Josef Selig, and Claudia Mahnke in the cast.

Performance Dates: Nov. 16 – 27, 2019

Pjotr Beczała, Corinne Winters, and Tomasz Konieczny headline the rarely performed “Halka” by Moniuskzo. Łukasz Borowicz conducts the new production by Mariusz Treliński.

Performance Dates: Dec. 15 – 31 2019

Marlis Petersen takes on her signature role as Strauss’ “Salome.” Leo Hussain conducts Nikolaus Habjan’s production which also stars John Daszak, Michaela Schuster, Johan Reuter, and Martin Mitterrutzner.

Performance Dates: Jan. 18 – 30, 2020

Christian Jost and Christoph Klimke’s “Egmont” makes its world premiere with a cast that includes Maria Bengtsson, Angelika Kirchschlager, Károly Szemerédy, Bo Skovhus, and Theresa Kronthaler. Michael Boder conducts Keith Warner’s new production.

Performance Dates: Feb. 17 – 26, 2020

Nicole Chevalier, Joseph Kaiser, Gábor Bretz, Christof Fischesser, Anna Lucia Richter, Benjamin Hulett, and Károly Szemerédy star in Beethoven’s “Fidelio” with Manfred Honeck conducting two-time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz’s production.

Performance Dates: March 16 – 27, 2020

Prokofiev’s “The Fiery Angel” gets a rare staging with Andrea Breth directing and Constantin Trinks conducting. John Lundgren, Ausrine Stundyte, Natascha Petrinsky, Tichina Vaughn, John Daszak, Mikhail Petrenko, Kristján Jóhannesson, and Andrew Owens leading the cast.

Performance Dates: April 16 – 28, 2020

Asmik Grigorian sings the title role in Bellini’s “Norma” with Enea Scala as Pollione, Theresa Kronthaler, and Stefan Kocan as Oroveso. Diego Matheuz conducts Vasily Barkhatov’s production.

Concert Opera 

Giovanni Antonini conducts Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” with Erwin Schrott in the title role, Alex Esposito, Sylvia Schwartz, Patrick Grahl, Miah Persson, David Soar, and Giulia Semenzato.

Performance Date: Sept. 24, 2019

Riccardo Broschi’s “Merope” gets a concert performance with Alessandro De Marchi conducting Anna Bonitatibus, David Hansen, Jeffrey Francis, Arianna Vendittelli, Vivica Genaux, Filippo Mineccia, and Hagen Matzeit.

Performance Date: Oct. 21, 2019

Konstantia Gourzi conducts “Happiness Machines,” a piece described as 22 Women animating a conversation about the future of the world. 

Performance Date: Oct. 25, 2019

William Christie conducts Mozart’s “La Finta Giardiniera” with Rory Carver, Mariasole Mainini, Moritz Kallenberg, Deborah Cachet, Théo Imart, Lauren Lodge Campbell, and Sreten Manojlovic.

Performance Date: Nov. 19, 2019

Arianna Vendittelli sings the title role in Handel’s “Semele” with Claudio Osele conducting a cast that also includes Sonia Prina and Roberta Invernizzi.

Performance Date: Nov. 26, 2019

Handel’s “Rodrigo” makes a rare appearance with Vivica Genaux in the title role, as well as Emöke Baráth, Julia Lezhneva, Emiliano Gonzalez Toro, Dilyara Idrisova, and Anthea Pichanik. Thibault Noally conducts.

Performance Date: Dec. 20, 2019

Deborah Cachet, Caroline Weynants, Mathias Vidal, Benedikt Kristjánsson, Benoît Arnould, Tomás Selc, Nicolas Brooymans, and Lukáš Zeman star in Rameau’s “Les Boréades.” Václav Luks conducts.

Performance Date: Jan. 22, 2020

Hasse’s “Irene” will get a performance with Vivica Genaux in the title role. Max Emanuel Cencic, David DQ Lee, and Bruno de Sá round out the cast. Aapo Häkkinen conducts.

Performance Date: Jan. 29, 2020

Lully’s “Isis” will be conducted by Christophe Rousset with a cast that includes Bénédicte Tauran, Eve-Maud Hubeaux, Ambroisine Bré, Cyril Auvity, Fabien Hyon, Philippe Estèphe, and Jean-Sébastien Bou.

Manfred Trojahn’s mono Opera “Ein Brief” gets its Austrian premiere alongside Beethoven’s “Christus am Olberge.”

Lena Belkina, Edgardo Rocha, Enea Scala, Max Emanuel Cencic, and Pavel Kudinov star in Rossini’s “La Donna del Lago” with conductor George Petrou.

Lucy Crowe sings the title role of Handel’s “Rodelinda” with Harry Bicket leading an all-star cast that includes Iestyn Davies, Joshua Elicott, Brandon Cedel, Jess Dandy, and Anthony Roth Constanzo.

Ivor Bolton conducts a program that includes Marlis Petersen entitled “Egmont/Erocia.”

Chamber Opera

Giancarlo Rizzi conducts an arranged version of “Faust” featuring Leonard Eröd, Quentin Desgeorges, Dumitru Madarašan, Jenna Siladie, Kristján Jóhannesson, Juliette Mars, and Ghazal Kazemi.

Tatiana Kuryatnikova, Jenna Siladie, Kristján Jóhannesson, and Quentin Desgeorges perform the first Jet special focusing on
“Carmen” in Jazz arrangements.

Handel’s “Giustino” gets a production by James Darrah starring Riccardo Angelo Strano, Jenna Siladie, Rafał Tomkiewicz, Tatiana Kuryatnikova, Johannes Bamberger, Kristján Jóhannesson, Dumitru Madarašan, and Ilona Revolskaya. Markellos Chryssicos conducts.
Performance Dates: Dec. 4, 2019 – Jan. 4, 2020
The second performance of Jet Special focuses on “Carmen” with Ilona Revolskaya, Jenna Siladie, Kristján Jóhannesson, and Johannes Bamberger.

Tscho Theissing and Kristine Tornquist’s “Genia” makes its world premiere with George Jackson conducting a production by Kateryna Sokolova. Kristján Jóhannesson, Jenna Siladie, Dumitru Madarašan, Quentin Desgeorges, Johannes Bamberger, and Ilona Revolskaya star in the new production.

Gluck’s “Orphée et Eurydice” gets a new production with a cast that includes Tatiana Kuryatnikova, Ilona Revolskaya, and Anita Rosati. Raphael Schluesselberg conducts the new production by Philipp M. Krenn.
