Piotr Beczala To Replace Roberto Alagna At Bayreuth

By Francisco Salazar

Piotr Beczala will replace Roberto Alagna at the Bayreuth Festival.

According to BR-Klassik, Beczala accepted the assignment on a short notice and was forced to cancel his recital in Granada to be at rehearsals of the new production by Yuval Sharon.

Beczala sang the title character of Lohengrin for the first in 2016 alongside Anna Netrebko in an acclaimed production, which was later released on DVD. This would be his Bayreuth debut and his second time taking on the Wagner opera.

Beczala was slated to perform recitals in Paris, Czech Republic, Munich, and Poland. He was also slated for Tanglewood to perform “La Bohème” alongside Kristine Opolais.

Roberto Alagna canceled his debut as Lohengrin last week citing work overload and ultimately being unable to learn the complete role on time.

“Lohengrin” opens on July 25, 2018, with a cast that also includes Anja Harteros, Waltraud Meier, and Georg Zeppenfeld.
