On Dec. 10, the Wiener Staatsoper is set to broadcast Massent’s “Werther.”

The live performance will be performed without an audience and will star Piotr Beczala in his company role debut. The star tenor will be joined by Gaëlle Arquez as Charlotte, Clemens Unterreiner as Albert, and Daniela Fally as Sophie.

The production by Andrei Serban will be conducted by Bertrand de Billy.

Beczala is well known for his interpretation of “Werther,” which he has performed at the Polish National Opera, Gran Teatre del Liceu, and Opéra de Paris. The tenor historically encored “Pourquoi me réveiller” during the Barcelona performances. He was set to perform the role at the Metropolitan Opera but the showcase was canceled due to the spread of COVID-19.

Audiences can view “Werther” on Mezzo.TV, Medici and listen on RADIO Ö1 19.00. ORF III will broadcast the opera on Jan. 10, 2021.
