Piotr Beczala has canceled his upcoming performance of Verdi’s “La Traviata” at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

The tenor announced via social media that he is still recovering from his burst blood vessel and was advised to take it slowly. He stated that while he will perform the upcoming concert in Hamburg alongside Angela Gheorghiu, he cannot rehearse and sing a fully staged opera.

As a result the Sept. 27 performance of “La Traviata” will be sung by Francesco Demuro.

Demuro is a well-known Italian tenor who is currently performing at the Opéra de Paris in a production of “I Puritani” and is slated to sing at the Donizetti Opera Festival and Berlin State Opera in a production of “Falstaff” this season.

Demuro joins a cast that includes Mariangela Sicilia as Violetta and Noel Bouley as Germont. Stephan Zilias conducts.

Beczala is scheduled to return to “La Traviata” for the Oct. 1, 2019 performance.
