Peter Gelb is criticizing the United States government for abandoning Ukraine.

During a concert at the Kyiv Camerata, the Metropolitan Opera’s General Manager took the stage to reinforce the company’s commitment to Ukraine and noted, “I stand before you as an American cultural leader who believes in a free Ukraine.”

During his speech, he did, however, criticize the U.S. government, stating, “I stand before you, the courageous members of this audience, with deep regrets that the government of my country, the bedrock of global democracy today, no longer stands for some of democracy’s most basic principles.”

He added, “But I also stand before you to confirm that there are many democratically minded Americans and citizens of the world that still do.”

This is not the first time that Gelb has criticized the American government. He recently went on a podcast in which he blamed Trump’s policies on the Met’s current struggles and issued a warning against autocrats controlling the arts. Gelb is one of the few leaders of a U.S. opera company who has made any criticism concerning Trump and his policies.
