Peter Gelb Confirms Met Opera Return of ‘Akhnaten’ in Coming Seasons

By David Salazar

The Metropolitan Opera will revive its hugely successful production of “Akhnaten” in two seasons, per The New York Times’ Zachary Woolfe. The announcement was made by General Manager Peter Gelb.

This will continue a trend of reviving Glass operas at the Met within four years of its initial premiere. “The Voyage” had its world premiere in 1992 and was revived four seasons later at the Met. “Satyagraha” made its Met debut in 2008 and would return in 2011.

“Akhnaten” has been one of the most successful productions at the Met in the 2019-20 season. Of the opening night performance, OperaWire’s review noted “The 2019-20 season is still young, but “Akhnaten” undeniably rules at the Met and it may be some time before its audiences see anything of this divine quality.”

Audiences that missed the opera in its initial run will get a chance to see the Live in HD performance via PBS’ Great Performances later this season.
