Peter Gelb has revealed that Simon Stone will return to the Metropolitan Opera to direct another new production.

In an interview with the New York Times, the company’s General Manager said that the Met will stage Stone’s production of Kaija Saariaho’s “Innocence,” which was first produced at the Festival Aix-En-Provence.

Gelb also said that the director may potentially also direct and write a new opera from scratch.

Stone’s new production of “Lucia di Lammermoor” is set to premiere on April 23, 2022 and has been garnering a lot of buzz for updating the work to modern-day. The production has generated mixed buzz on social media with Gelb noting, “I don’t think that over the years during my tenure, even the older elements of the audience have become more adventurous. That doesn’t mean everyone’s going to live it, but hopefully everyone is going to be stimulated.”

The New York Times has also stated that the production risks boos like the 2009  “Tosca” by Luc Bondy that opened the 2009-10 season.
