By David Salazar

The Peninsula Shanghai is set to present Offenbach’s “Pomme d’Api” on March 8 and 9, 2024.

The production will be presented as a celebration of Sino-French diplomatic relations.

The work stars soprano Xing Xinyuan as Catherine, tenor Lin Junliang as Gustave, and baritone Song Luoyan as Rabastens. Chen Yiyan is the piano soloist while Jiang Yang conducts. Liang Lizhen is the producer and Chen Yong is the executive producer.

“We recently had the privilege of experiencing ‘Pomme d’Api’ at the Guangzhou Opera House, where we felt so much energy and had fun in seeing an interactive operetta which was different from a classical opera format,” Jisoo Chon, Managing Director The Peninsula Shanghai, told OperaWire. “Afterwards, we were convinced to bring this production to Shanghai, a city known for its energy, love for culture and immense level of curiosity for unique experience.

“After close collaboration over last few months with Peter Gordon, Chen Yong and Guangzhou Opera House, our wish came to a fruition in presenting “Pomme d’Api” to our beautiful city of Shanghai, aligned with The Peninsula Shanghai Hotel’s efforts in further promoting opera culture in the city.”

This production of the operetta, which premiered at the Guangzhou Opera House as part of the 2023 French Croisements Festival, incorporates material from “Pépito” and “La Périchole.”
