PBS has announced that it will start broadcasting Ricky Ian Gordon’s “Intimate Apparel” as part of its Great Performances series.

The showcase, which premiered on Sept. 23, 2022 on PBS will also be viewable on the PBS Video App and the company’s official website.

The opera, which is set in Manhattan in 1905, follows the story of an African American seamstress who makes women’s undergarments. She engages in a relationship with a mysterious laborer on the Panama Canal and then marries him, only to realize the relationship is not what she had imagined it would be. From there she comes to the realization that she must rely only on herself to overcome the greatest challenges in life.

The opera, which was presented at the Lincoln Center Theater’s Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater in March 2022, starred Justin Austin, Adrienne Danrich, Arnold Livingston Geis, Naomi Louisa, and Krysty Swann. The work features a libretto by Lynn Nottage and was directed by Bartlett Sher.
