Paula Murrihy, Tara Erraught & Sinéad Campbell-Wallace Lead Irish National Opera’s 2021-22 Season

The Irish National Opera has announced its 2021-22 season which will begin with streamed performances and then continue with a return to live performances. Here is a look:

Streamed Performances 

The company will world premiere a new film version of Peter Maxwell Davies’ chamber opera “The Lighthouse” directed by Edwina Casey presented in outdoor screenings at locations across Ireland. Brenton Ryan, Ben McAteer, and John Molloy star with Nil Venditti conducting.

Screening Dates: July 7 – 17, 2021

Studio composer Amanda Feery teams up with writer Megan Nolan to present the world premiere of “A Thing I Cannot Name” debuting online at West Cork Literary Festival. The opera stars Kelli-Ann Masterson, Rachel Goode, and Aebh Kelly.

Streaming Date: July 27, 2021

“Alice’s Adventures Under Ground” will be premiered in a film version with a cast that includes Claudia Boyle, Clare Presland, Hilary Summers, Gavan Ring, Peter Tantsits, Stephen Richardson, and Alan Ewing. André de Ridder conducts the production by Antony McDonald.

Streaming Dates: Nov 5, 2021-May 5, 2022

Live performances 

Conall Morrison directs a production of Strauss’ “Elektra” with Giselle Allen, Máire Flavin, Imelda Drumm, Tómas Tómasson, and Peter Marsh. Fergus Sheil conducts and there will be a prerecorded orchestra

Performance Dates: August 5-14, 2021

“Least Like the Other, Searching for Rosemary Kennedy” will feature an orchestra pre-recorded in a new surround-sound, digitally manipulated sonic experience. The work stars Naomi Louisa O’Connell, Amy Ní Fhearraigh, Stephanie Dufresne, Ronan Leahy, and Aoife Spillane-Hinks.

Performance Dates: Sept. 11-25, 2021

Sinéad Campbell Wallace, Robert Murray, James Rutherford, Brian Mulligan, Kelli-Ann Masterson, Dean Power, and David Howes star in Beethoven’s “Fidelio” with Fergus Sheil conducting Annabelle Comyn’s production.

Performance Dates: Nov. 7-13, 2021

Vivaldi’s “Bajazet” makes its Irish National Opera premiere with James Laing, Gianluca Margheri, Niamh O’Sullivan, Eric Jurenas, Rachel Kelly, and Aoife Miskelly. Peter Whelan conducts the production by Adele Thomas.

Performance Dates: Jan 15-Feb 12, 2022

Paula Murrihy sings the title role in Bizet’s “Carmen” with Dinyar Vania as Don José, Celine Byrne as Micaëla, and Milan Siljanov as Escamillo. Paul Curran directs the production and Kenneth Montgomery conducts.

Performance Dates: March 7-12, 2022

Bríd Ní Ghruagáin and Brendan Collins star in Elaine Agnew and Jessica Traynor’s “Paperboat.”

Performance Dates: April 21-23, 2022

Tara Erraught performs in the titular role in Donizetti’s “Maria Stuarda” opposite Anna Devin as Elisabetta. The cast also includes Amy Ní Fhearraigh, Arthur Espiritu, Giorgio Caoduro, and Callum Thorpe. Fergus Sheil conducts the production by Tom Creed.

Performance Dates: June 5-19, 2022

David Coonan and Dylan Coburn Gray’s new youth opera “Horse Ape Bird” is set to be conducted by  Elaine Kelly.

Performance Dates: June 24 & 26, 2022

Out of the Ordinary” will be an exciting new Virtual Reality Community Opera project working with communities in Inis Meáin, Tallaght and rural Ireland. The opera will be experienced via virtual reality headset touring to locations across Ireland during summer 2022.
