Paola Prestini and Magos Herrera’s “Primero Sueño” will make its Mexican premiere this December.

The work about Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, will get its first Mexican performance on Dec. 5, 2025, in Puebla, with a Mexico City date set for Dec. 10.

Th former showcase will be a parade featuring thousands of audience members, cast, and local community choirs  as they make their way toward the Zócalo and the Atrium of the Cathedral of Puebla where the Bishop of Puebla once forbade Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz from continuing her writing, insisting that women should favor obedience over intellectual ambition.

The Mexico City showcase’s setting, the Chamber of Deputies, emphasizes the work’s exploration of voice, knowledge, and female autonomy.

The opera was originally conceived and developed by Prestini and Herrera in Mexico City and San Miguel de Allende. It had its premiere performances in New York City in January 2025 and a recording will be released on Nov. 1, 2025.

The original staging at the Metropolitan Museum Cloisters, was directed by Louisa Proske. The Mexican adaptation will be led by choreographer Jorrell Lawyer-Jefferson.

Of the original production, OperaWire’s Jennifer Pyron wrote, “‘Primero Sueño’s’ intimate approach in telling Sor Juana’s story through the perspective of Prestini, Herrera, and Proske unlocked the intuitive power behind every word, gesture, and articulation of emotion thought possible. This work is everything dreamed and imagined, produced and performed with utmost care, consciousness and soul. “Primero Sueño” lights the way forward for all.”

“Primero Sueño” was originally commissioned by The Metropolitan Museum of Art (MetLiveArts) and VisionIntoArt.
