Palacio de Bellas Artes to Present New Production of ‘Florencia en el Amazonas’

By David Salazar

The Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico is set to present a new production of “Florencia en el Amazonas” this October.

This represents the first time that the opera is staged in a production at the Palacio de Bellas Artes. Following the works premiere in Houston in 1996, audiences in Mexico were able to hear a performance of the work at Bellas Artes in May 1999. However, per Reforma, the first Mexican performances of the opera were concert showcases due to budget complications.

The production, which opens on Oct. 8 and runs through the 15, will be conducted by Iván López Reynosa and directed by Enrique Singer.

The entire cast is comprised of Mexican singers including Dhyana Arom, Denis Vélez, Gabriela Florez, Evanivaldo Correa, Carlos Arámbula, Óscar Velázquez, and Armando Gama.

“Florencia en el Amazonas” has also been presented at Guadalajara, Texcoco, and Metepec in Mexico as well. The opera has traveled the world, appearing in Los Angeles, New York, Michigan, Arizona, Tuscon, Bogotá, Chicago, Tenerife, Cincinnati, Germany, and Seattle, among others.
