Pacific Opera Victoria & Vancouver Opera Present ‘The Flight of the Hummingbird’

By David Salazar

Pacific Opera Victoria and Vancouver Opera will team up to present “The Flight of the Hummingbird” on March 18-22, 2020 at the Baumann Centre in Victoria.

The opera, which was co-commissioned and co-produced by the two companies, is intended for younger audiences and tells the story of how a number of animals of the forest come together to save their home from a raging fire. The work is based on the book “Flight of the Hummingbird – A Parable for the Environment.”

The opera was composed by Maxine Goulet with a libretto by Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas, who write and illustrated the book on which it is based. The opera, which lasts 45 minutes, will be directed by Glynis Leyshon. It will feature four singers and a small ensemble of musicians.

Additionally, the opera has been touring more than 100 schools and community venues throughout British Columbia starting this past January; the tour will continue through May.
