Pacific Opera Victoria & Vancouver Opera in Schools to Present ‘The Flight of the Hummingbird’

Pacific Opera Victoria and Vancouver Opera in Schools are set to present “The Flight of the Hummingbird.”

The production is set to be shown in April to students across British Columbia.

The opera is an environmental fable about moral courage with a libretto and creative design by Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas and the late Barry Gilson with music composed by Maxime Goulet. “The Flight of the Hummingbird” is 45 minutes in length and will feature Olivia Kang as Dukdukdiya, Bruno Roy as Owl, Marcel d’Entremont as Bear and Keely McPeek as Bunny. They are accompanied by Nathaniel Ben-Horin on piano and Matthew Udry on cello. Glynis Leyshon will direct the work with Perri Lo conducting.

In a statement Tom Wright, Vancouver Opera General Director said, “We are honored to be working in partnership with Pacific Opera Victoria to bring this incredible and beautiful work to students across British Columbia this coming spring. In October 2021 we made our original touring production available online during our digital season as we wanted to continue to share this story with young audiences who have been enthralled by the dynamic cast of characters and its touching story.”

Vancouver Opera In Schools is one of the largest opera touring programs of its kind in Canada and started over 40 years ago. Each season, VOIS opera to children and their families in schools and community venues across British Columbia and the fully staged operas are in English.
