Pacific Opera Project To Present ‘The Magic Flute’

By Nicole Kuchta

The Pacific Opera Project is set to present “The Magic Flute.”

Only it’s not your ordinary interpretation of the classic opera – no, this is a new 1980s video game inspired production of Mozart’s otherworldly tale! The heroes and villains will be transported to a “land of video games resembling Mario Bros. and Zelda.”

The opera will be performed to a new English libretto by Artistic Director Josh Shaw and E. Scott Levin, and Edward Benyas will conduct.

The principal cast will feature Arnold Livingston Geis as Tamino, Alexandra Schoeny as Pamina, E. Scott Levin as Papageno, Michelle Drever as Queen of the Night, Andrew Potter as Sarastro, Robert Norman as Monostatos, and Laura Broscow as Papagena.

“The Magic Flute” will be performed on Mar. 2, 3, 8, 9, and 10, 2019, including two Sunday matinees, at the El Portal Theatre.

Pacific Opera Project hopes that its “innovative, affordable, and entertaining” productions will attract a wider audience, helping to preserve opera as an art form.
