Oregon Symphony Cancels All Live Concerts Until June 2021
By Chris RuelOregon Symphony announced this week that the organization has canceled all live concerts and events until June 14, 2021. The Symphony’s decision comes at a time when COVID-19 cases within the United States have exploded weeks ahead of health officials’ predictions, and the country enters a dangerous season of family get-togethers. According to the organization’s press release, the Symphony will explore ways to reschedule performances.
“I am deeply saddened that our audiences will not have the opportunity to experience live, in-person concerts this season. The Oregon Symphony has a close and unique relationship with its community and I, personally, will miss sharing the joy of music with Oregon audiences and my special connection with patrons that I have enjoyed over the years,” stated Music Director Carlos Kalmar in the announcement. The cancelation impacts Kalmar’s 18th and final season as Music Director. The organization plans to honor his tenure at a future date.
Oregon Symphony’s president and CEO, Scott Showalter, stated that the health of its artists, patrons, and staff remains a top priority. He went on to say in the release that the organization looks forward to reuniting with the community in-person and celebrating the Symphony’s 125th anniversary.
In lieu of live events, Oregon Symphony has programmed a wide range of digital offerings for audiences of all ages with plans to showcase diverse composers from across musical genres and cultures. The Symphony’s digital initiatives have benefited from past success with programs like its popular children’s classical series, Symphony Storytime, and Essential Sounds, a musical tribute to essential workers.
The multi-Grammy Award®-nominated Symphony anticipates announcing its 2021-22 season in early 2021. Oregon Symphony is the oldest orchestra in the western United States, and its syndicated programming for broadcast reaches tens of millions of people worldwide.
