Orchestre Classique de Montréal to Present World Premiere of ‘La Flambeau’
By David SalazarThe Orchestre Classique de Montréal has announced the creation of “La Flambeau.”
The opera, which is being created alongside Haitian-Canadian composer David Bontemps will world premiere in February 2023 in Hamilton and Montréal.
The work will star Cameroonian-born soprano Suzanne Taffot, Canadian mezzo-soprano Catherine Daniel, Jamaican-Canadian tenor Paul Williamson, and Canadian bass Korin Thomas‑Smith, all under the direction of Mariah Inger.
“I’m very pleased, first of all, to have had the chance to set my friend Faubert’s powerful play to music,” Bontemps, who is also a pianist, said in a press release. “It’s a work that invites audiences to re-examine their convictions. I’m also thrilled that my opera is being premiered in my adopted city by such a renowned orchestra,” he says.
