Oratorio Society of New York to present ‘Samson’

By Francisco Salazar

The Oratorio Society of New York is set to conclude its 150th Anniversary and 2023-2024 season with Händel’s “Samson.”

The concert is slated to take place on May 6, 2024 with Kent Tritle conducting the piece with soloists Nola Richardson, Mary Beth Nelson, Lawrence Jones, Sidney Outlaw, and Joseph Beutel.

The three-act oratorio is well-known for the arias “Let the bright Seraphim,” “Total eclipse,” and “Let their celestial concerts all unite.”.

In a statement, Music Director Tritle said, “The Oratorio Society has a strong historical connection to the music of Handel, not only with Messiah. In our first-ever concert on December 3, 1873 at Knabe Hall, excerpts from Handel’s Samson were included leading up to the complete performance the following May. We are delighted to revisit Samson for the first time since 1948 with a complete version as performed by Handel himself. We believe our founder, Leopold Damrosch would be proud!”
