Opernhaus Zürich will honor the memory of the late conductor Nello Santi by performing Giuseppe Verdi’s Messa da Requiem, according to the official statement on the company’s website.

General Music Director of the Opernhaus Zürich Maestro Fabio Luisi will conduct the Zürich Philharmonic in the performance of Verdi’s masterwork that will star soloists soprano Hibla Gerzmava, tenor Benjamin Bernheim, and bass Georg Zeppenfeld. The mezzo-soprano soloist is yet to be determined.

Santi was associated with the Opernhaus Zürich for over 60 years, longer than any other artist in the history of the house. Santi made his debut at the Opernhaus Zürich in 1958, conducting Verdi and Piave’s “La Forza del Destino.” The legendary conductor then appeared regularly at the Opernhaus, conducting works such as “Ernani,” “I Lombardi alla prima crociata,” “Semiramide,” and “Poliuto,” among others.

Santi’s last appearance onstage at the Opernhaus Zürich was in March 2019, when he conducted “Lucia di Lammermoor.”

The performance will take place on March 28, 2020.
